Chapter 15

SHEILA woke and reached for the clock to check the time. “Shit!”

Jumping out of bed, she was already in the bathroom before she felt the throbbing in her head. She took two aspirin then showered quickly. She dressed, dashed to the kitchen, toasting a couple slices of bread and making a cup of tea since there was no time for real coffee.

She raced into the office, gave a quick muttered greeting to her staff and went in to see her first patient. Five minutes later, she calmly left the exam room, then raced for the restroom, and was ill. The pounding in her head continued, and she splashed cool water on her face.

Using paper towels, she carefully dried off, only then realizing she hadn’t put on any makeup. God! She looked a mess. Pale and clammy with dark circles under bloodshot eyes. What the hell was I thinking finishing that bottle of wine? And after the double of bourbon.

She gave herself another moment to make sure her stomach had settled and returned to the exam room. She finished the appointment, and got through the next four bookings without being ill again. Terri ignored her calls last night, forcing her to leave messages on the answering machine. Sheila closed her eyes, leaned back in the chair and rubbed at her temples. She almost dozed off when she heard a soft rap on the door.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. Thought you could use these.” Jamie handed her a bottle of water, and two pills. “Tylenol, just in case you didn’t take anything before.” Sheila opened the water and took the pills right away. “Fun night, rough morning?”

Sheila stood looking at her. “Just overindulged a little. Had a bit of a pity party last night. I should know better.”

“The Davidsons should be here in about ten minutes, how do you want to handle it? There are eight pups, six weeks.”

“Let’s use the large room, and the lift table. Do each pup on the table or we’ll end up wrestling on the floor trying to fend the others off.”

“Sounds good. I’ll set up the room. This is the first round of vaccines, and worming.”

“Thank you. Great Danes, right?” She looked up when the loud commotion of puppies arriving filled the room. “Has
